Welcome to Healthy Eating 101
Hey parents! Want to see your kids grow up healthy and strong? We all do! And guess what? A balanced diet is a big secret. But figuring out what to feed our little ones, especially the picky eaters, can sometimes feel like a giant puzzle. Don’t worry!
With a bit of know-how and a dash of creativity, we can make healthy eating fun and doable. Let’s dive into some smart tips and yummy recipes that will have your family asking for seconds.
Unlock the Secrets of Balanced Meals with Canada's Food Guide
Canada's Food Guide is like a treasure map for feeding our kids a nutritional balanced meal. The guide recommends us to mix it up with fruits and vegetables, grains, proteins, and dairy (or alternatives). Aim to include a mix of these food groups in each meal and snack to ensure your child receives a wide range of essential nutrients. Imagine a colorful plate at each meal, like whole-grain toast with peanut butter, some sliced fruit, and a glass of milk for breakfast. Sounds delicious, right?
Turning Picky Eaters into Food Explorers
Got a picky eater? No problem! Keep calm and get creative. Let your kids help plan and prepare meals to increase their interest and investment in trying new foods. They’re more likely to eat something they’ve made. Offer a variety of healthy options at each meal and encourage them to explore new flavors and don’t give up if they don’t bite at first—it can take a few tries with new foods.
Creating a Positive Eating Environment at Home
The right environment can make a big difference in how kids eat. Creating a positive eating environment can help encourage healthy choices and reduce picky eating behaviors. Lead by example, when they see you eating healthy, they’re more likely to do the same. Keep healthy snacks in reach and save the sweets for special occasions. Enjoy meals together without any screens or distractions, and involve children in grocery shopping, and meal preparation. Maybe even grow some veggies together in the garden to foster a deeper connection to their food and increase their willingness to try new things.
Fun Nutritious Recipes Your Kids Will Love
Now for the fun part—cooking together! Get creative in the kitchen by involving your children in making colorful and flavorful dishes together. How about starting with a homemade pizza with a whole wheat crust and lots of veggies on top? Or blend up a colorful fruit smoothie for a yummy treat. You can also experiment with kid-friendly recipes like veggie-loaded pasta dishes, homemade granola bars, for a fun and nutritious snack.
Ready for a fun snack? Let’s make some fruit kabobs with a yogurt dip:
Fruit Kabobs with Yogurt Dip Recipe
Ingredients for Kabobs:
Assorted fresh fruits, such as strawberries, pineapple chunks, grapes, kiwi slices, and melon balls
Wooden skewers
Ingredients for Yogurt Dip:
1 cup plain Greek yogurt
2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (adjust to taste)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Optional: a squeeze of fresh lemon juice for added freshness
Instructions:
Prepare the fruit by washing it thoroughly and cutting it into bite-sized pieces, if needed. Arrange the fruit on a plate or platter.
Soak the wooden skewers in water for about 30 minutes to prevent them from burning during grilling or broiling.
Thread the fruit onto the skewers, alternating between different fruits to create colorful patterns. Leave a little space at the end of each skewer for easy handling.
In a small bowl, mix together the Greek yogurt, honey or maple syrup, vanilla extract, and optional lemon juice until well combined. Taste and adjust the sweetness if needed.
Serve the fruit kabobs with the yogurt dip on the side for dipping. Alternatively, you can drizzle the yogurt dip over the fruit kabobs just before serving for a decorative touch.
Enjoy your delicious and nutritious fruit kabobs with yogurt dip as a refreshing snack or dessert!
Feel free to customize this recipe by using your favorite fruits or adding additional toppings such as shredded coconut, chopped nuts, or a sprinkle of cinnamon. It's a fun and healthy treat that the whole family will love!
