The warm weather is coming - here’s how to prepare for spring and summer fun!
April 19, 2024
In January 2023, the Ontario government announced a significant change in the healthcare landscape. Pharmacists were granted the authority to prescribe medication for specific medical conditions (read more HERE ).
As we enter spring, and with summer just around the corner, Canadian families will spend more time outside, soaking up the sun and enjoying the great outdoors through camping, hiking, and other outdoor activities.
We need time outdoors, and so do our kids! However, outdoor fun comes with seasonal health concerns, such as seasonal allergies, tick bites, insect bites, and rashes.
With preventative measures, knowledge, and expert pediatric advice from our team of specialized KixNurses, you can sit back and relax as you keep your children safe and healthy while still enjoying all the season's benefits.
Our health and wellness membership, Kix360°, offers 24/7 access to our team of specialized pediatric Registered Nurses who can give our KixFamilies: support and advice about their child’s condition, explain why they need the prescription, and how to take the prescribed medication, as well as providing ongoing management throughout the presenting illness - which the pharmacist may not be able to provide.
Our KixFamilies also have access to our pediatric Nurse Practitioners, who can diagnose, prescribe and make referrals to Pediatricians and Allied Healthcare Professionals as needed.
This allows families to feel supported during their urgent care concerns, but in addition to any urgent care matters, no matter how big or small the concern or question is, Kix360° is here to support all of your child(ren)’s health and wellness goals.
Let’s start with what to do if your child encounters these seasonal pediatric concerns this season!
Seasonal Allergies
If your little one experiences seasonal allergies, such as hay fever, our KixNurses are available 24/7 via messaging and video calling to help you to receive a timely diagnosis and the necessary medications your little one may need.
During the spring, seasonal allergies tend to flare, which can cause allergies due to all the plants and trees blooming.
As a result, your child may start experiencing symptoms such as:
A runny nose.
Watery eyes.
Sneezing.
Coughing.
Itchy eyes and nose.
If this is the case, talk to a KixNurse so they can assess the symptoms and create a care plan to help your child manage their allergies.
To alleviate your child's symptoms, our KixNurses can support you with over-the-counter recommendations. We will refer your little one to a Nurse Practitioner or Pharmacist if necessary. This way, you can avoid the Emergency Room and enjoy the warmer months with peace of mind.
Insect Bites, Ticks, and Rashes
Are your family big campers? Or do you live in a more rural area? Then you already know that the summer brings concerns such as insect bites, ticks, and rashes that can be itchy and uncomfortable for your child.
Our KixNurses can assess your child’s symptoms, identify the health concern, and navigate you to the fastest and most efficient healthcare route. Whether it’s your local pharmacist or a referral to one of our Nurse Practitioners, your child will quickly get the medication and care they need.
Our KixNurses will continue to check in to see how they are feeling and keep an eye on their bites and rashes to ensure they resolve.
KixTip: Run a lint roller over your child’s skin, hair, and clothing after a walk in the forest to avoid tick bites. This reduces the risk of the tick burrowing into your skin. If you are concerned about tick bites, talk to a KixNurse today. We will guide you through the steps to remove it safely and get the appropriate medical care, no matter where you are!
